Short synopsis:

Mounir lives in a dusty village in Algeria and dreams about a better life for himself and his family – and about more respect from the people in his village. He particularly suffers from the ridicule he has to endure because of his sister's narcolepsy. When he announces her engagement to a rich businessman one night, his life gets a lot more complicated. As the whole village expectantly prepares the wedding for a groom that does not exist, Rym awakes from her sleepiness and starts to pursue her own plans: She has been in a secret relationship with Mounir's best friend for years.

Why this comedy matters:
You will find many masquerades in this Algerian village – and quite a few small-town peculiarities get made fun of along the way. Fictitious European husbands, sleeping beauties, sunglasses against dust, men with strange manners and cool women – MASCARADES is a fast-paced comedy with wonderful actors and a homage to the rich tradition of humor in Arabic films. The first feature film directed by the fantastic Lyès Salem (also starring in the lead role) is already a cult classic in the Maghrebian countries!

Won: Dubai International Film Festival 2008 – Best Film and FIPRESCI Award; Cairo International Film Festival 2008 – Best Film; Festival International du Film Francophone de Namur 2008 – Audience Award and Junior Jury Preis; Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (Fespaco) 2009 – Bronze Stallion

LyesSalem-fertigDirector Lyès Salem:
"It's like Arab filmmakers have an obligation to stick to certain subjects like politics. We can't make scary movies or comedies. For me, it was important for Algerian audiences to laugh about themselves. When we laugh about ourselves, we can think, too."

Actor, director and screenwriter Lyès Salem was born in Algeria in 1973. Today he lives in Algier and Paris. He studied theater, television and film in Paris and completed his acting training at the renowned École du Théâtre National de Chaillot. After two award-winning short films, JEAN FARÈS (2001) and COUSINES (2003), he directed his first feature film MASCARADES in 2008.
